
Biography
Having set his foot on the Hong Kong blues scene for over two decades, Ram Cheung devotes his time and energy to blues music with his firm commitment to upholding authentic, traditional blues style. As an enthusiastic blues guitarist and lead vocalist, Ram managed to set up his own 4-piece electric blues band Then You Suffer, acoustic blues duo JR Blues Line, and also blues sextet Shake That Thing, widely infused with his diverse taste of experimental flavours. He also enjoyed performing with numerous celebrated blues and jazz musicians, including Henry Chung, Eugene Pao, Tommy Chung, Sybil Thomas, Shun Kikuta, Tsang Tak Hong, Alan Kwan and more.
Ram has performed in different clubs, venues and festivals in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Mainland China and Japan. Some notable performances includes The Works By The Harbour presented by RTHK, Clockenflap, Grassfest, The Gloomy Island Blues Festival, Jazz On The Lake - Hangzhou International Jazz Festival, Hong Kong x Osaka x Taipei Blues Exchange New Year’s Eve Party in Taipei, Freespace Jazz Fest (2020 & 2021), HK Bluesfest 2024 and hush! Beach Concerts 2024 (Macau).
Other than performing, Ram is also enthusiastic about promoting blues music to the public by participating in LCSD funding Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme programme - “Breathe with the Harmonica - Blues & Jazz” as performer, demonstrating his original compositions on LCSD funding online programme - “Jazz Composers’ Lab” series, conducting blues guitar workshop for The Gloomy Island Blues Festival, presenting as guest on radio programme “Jazz Psychology” (RTHK), “Gimme 5” (RTHK), presenting as guest speaker in "Black Music Legends - Ram Cheung On Robert Johnson" talk series curated by Jazz Society and so on. Ram is probably one of the busiest bluesmen in town.
In November of 2022, Ram with his band Shake That Thing released a single “What The World’s Gonna Do” featuring one of the most celebrated Hong Kong guitar icon Eugene Pao on guitar. Then in December of 2022, a full album “19-22 Blues” has launched on streaming platforms like Spotify, iTunes, YouTube Music, etc. This is undoubtedly a milestone in Ram’s musician career and reveals his ability to create music that blended traditional blues with his own style and sense of blues.
